When most Rochester-area homeowners think about their plumbing, they're thinking about what's inside the house. But the plumbing on the outside of your home deserves just as much attention, and in Monroe County, where seasons swing from below-freezing winters to humid summers, outdoor plumbing takes a beating year-round. Neglecting it can lead to frozen pipes, burst spigots, failed irrigation systems, and costly water damage, often in the spots that are hardest and most expensive to repair.
At Morelli Plumbing LLC, we've been handling outdoor plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair for homeowners throughout Webster and Rochester, NY since 1978. This guide covers everything you need to know about protecting and maintaining your exterior plumbing through every season.

Outdoor plumbing covers more ground than most homeowners realize. In a typical Rochester-area home, exterior plumbing includes hose bibs and spigots, irrigation and sprinkler systems, outdoor kitchen plumbing, garden water connections, outdoor shower installations, sump pump discharge lines, downspout drainage connections, and the main water service line running from the municipal supply to your home. Each of these components has specific seasonal needs and failure points.
Our outdoor plumbing services in Rochester, NY cover all of these areas, from new installations to seasonal maintenance and emergency repairs.
Spring in Monroe County is the season to reactivate outdoor plumbing that was shut down for winter. But bringing systems back online carelessly can cause problems that weren't there when you shut everything down in the fall.
Before opening outdoor water supply valves in the spring, physically inspect each hose bib and spigot for signs of damage. Frost-free hose bibs are designed to prevent freeze damage, but if a hose was left connected over winter, water could not drain from the fixture properly and the bib may still have sustained damage. Look for cracks in the body of the fixture, loose handles, or any sign of previous leaking around the base.
If a hose bib didn't survive the winter, spring is the right time to replace it before you start relying on it for the season. Our team handles hose bib installation and replacement throughout the Rochester area quickly and affordably.
Irrigation system startup after winter is a process that should be done gradually. Opening the main irrigation shutoff too quickly can cause a water hammer effect that damages valves and heads. Turn on each zone individually, inspect heads for damage from frost heave or equipment, and check that the controller is properly programmed for the new season.
If your irrigation system was professionally blown out in the fall, startup should be straightforward. If it wasn't properly winterized, there may be cracked components that need to be addressed before the system can operate correctly. Our winterization services include proper irrigation shutdown in the fall to prevent exactly this situation.
Summer is the season when outdoor plumbing gets the most use. Garden watering, outdoor entertaining, pool maintenance, and lawn irrigation all put sustained demand on exterior plumbing systems. It's also the best time of year to add outdoor plumbing features you've been considering.
Outdoor kitchens have become increasingly popular in the Rochester area as homeowners invest in their outdoor living spaces. A properly plumbed outdoor kitchen needs a dedicated water supply line, a sink with proper drainage, and in some cases, a connection for an outdoor refrigerator or bar setup. This is not a DIY project. Running supply lines and drainage to an exterior kitchen requires permits in most Monroe County municipalities and should be handled by a licensed plumber.
We install outdoor kitchen plumbing throughout the Webster and Rochester area, coordinating with contractors and homeowners to integrate the plumbing into the overall outdoor kitchen design. The result is a functional, properly drained outdoor cooking and entertaining space that adds real value to your home.
An outdoor shower is a practical addition for homes with pools, proximity to beaches at Lake Ontario, or active families who spend time outdoors. We install outdoor showers with proper hot and cold supply connections and drainage solutions appropriate for the property layout. Every outdoor shower installation includes frost-free shutoffs so the fixture can be properly winterized before cold weather arrives.
Many Rochester-area homes don't have enough hose bibs in the right locations. Having to run hoses across large properties to reach garden beds, detached garages, or pool equipment areas is inconvenient and hard on the hoses themselves. We can add hose bibs anywhere on your property by tapping into existing supply lines, and we install frost-free models as the standard for all Monroe County homes.
Fall is the most critical season for outdoor plumbing maintenance in Rochester. Everything that was running all summer needs to be properly shut down and protected before temperatures drop. Getting this wrong, or leaving it too late, is how homeowners end up with burst pipes and expensive repairs in January.
Every outdoor hose bib needs to be shut off at the interior supply valve and drained before freezing temperatures arrive. This means disconnecting all hoses first so the frost-free bib can drain properly, then closing the interior shutoff and opening the exterior faucet to release any remaining water in the line.
Don't assume frost-free hose bibs protect themselves without this step. They drain the pipe behind the wall, but only if the exterior faucet handle is left in the open position after the interior shutoff is closed. If you skip this step, water can remain in the fixture and freeze anyway.
Blowing out an irrigation system with compressed air to remove all water from the lines, valves, and heads is the most effective winterization method for Monroe County's climate. This should be done by a professional using the right equipment and the right technique for your system type. Over-pressurizing the lines during blowout can damage components, and under-doing it leaves water in the system to freeze.
Schedule your irrigation winterization before the first hard freeze. October is the ideal window for most Rochester-area properties. Our winterization team handles irrigation blowouts as part of comprehensive fall plumbing preparation.
With outdoor plumbing properly shut down and protected, winter should be uneventful on the exterior plumbing front. But a few things are worth monitoring.
Keep an eye on your sump pump discharge line. These lines run from the interior sump basin to an exterior discharge point, and they can freeze during extended cold snaps if the discharge point is buried in snow or ice. A frozen discharge line can cause the pump to fail and your basement to flood. Check the discharge opening periodically during heavy winter weather.
Also watch for any signs of exterior leaks or dripping from hose bibs during mild days. If a frost-free bib was damaged and is leaking when temperatures rise slightly, you want to catch and address that before it becomes a larger problem when full pressure is restored in spring.
From spring startup to fall winterization, Morelli Plumbing handles all aspects of outdoor plumbing for homeowners throughout Monroe County. We've been doing it since 1978 and we know what Rochester's climate demands from exterior plumbing systems.
